Installing and Configuring a DHCP Server on part 2

Using the MMC Action Menu

To configure a server, click once to highlight it, and then click the Action menu. The Action menu allows you to perform the following tasks if you select a particular DHCP server object:

  • Display Statistics—This shows statistical information about the selected server, such as the time the server started, the number of requests and offers, and the number (and percentage) of addresses in use, among other things.
  • New Multicast Scope—Use this to set up a group of IP multicast addresses that can be distributed to computers on the network. You can use this to define multicast scopes for selected network computers.
  • Reconcile All Scopes—This menu option compares information in the DHCP database about address scopes with that stored in the Registry and reconciles any differences. Although it’s not a substitute for better disaster recovery operations (such as making backups), this can be used to recover a DHCP server and be sure that the scope of addresses it is allowed to use is valid.

  • Authorize/Unauthorize—As explained in the preceding section, this action item allows you to authorize a server to function on the network by registering it in the Active Directory. This option is presented as Unauthorize if you’ve highlighted a server that is already authorized.
  • All Tasks—This gives you access to the Stop/Start/Pause/Resume/Restart tasks.
  • Refresh—This refreshes the current display.
  • Properties—This option brings up the properties page for the selected entry.

When you first install the service, the first thing you need to do is create a scope of IP addresses that the DHCP server can use to allocate leases to its clients. After that, other options in the Action menu can be used to further configure the server.
