Installing and Configuring SQL Server 2000

Posted by arlene

This guide is adapted from the SQL Server 2000 CD. Within this appendix, you will find the most relevant way to configure SQL Server 2000 for our requirements. Just remember it is not the only way, but it is the best for us!

This appendix is full of steps and figures that show you exactly what you need to know when performing the installation.

For this installation guide, I assume you have these three things:

  • All the minimum software requirements installed. If you’re not sure about the details, see the “System Requirements” section of the Introduction.
  • A copy of SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition. This is the version of SQL Server 2000 that we use to develop the SQL Spy Net application. If you have the Standard Edition or are working on a network, by all means proceed with your version, but just be aware that you’ll encounter some variations in the screens.
  • You also should have the Windows 98 or other Windows version installation disk handy (just in case).

I suggest that you back up any important files you have on your machine to ensure that, if the installation turns “pear-shaped,” you can recover. These installations usually do not have a lot of user interaction, but it still pays to be careful.

Living the Web 2.0[ic:geek]A SQL Server instance is an installation of SQL Server on your machine. This can be any version of SQL Server, but if it is prior to SQL Server 2000 your named instance will be Default. Named instances allow us to have multiple installations of SQL Server on our machines (a new feature) that all behave like separate machines.

So, now that we’re ready to go, let’s begin.

Selecting the Type of Installation

Pop the SQL Server 2000 CD into your CD-ROM drive. The install application should start automatically, but if it doesn’t, locate the Autorun.exe on the root of the CD, and double-click to start the installation.

After the install application starts, you see a display screen.

Five options are available at this stage.

One option, the SQL Server 2000 Prerequisites option, is where you install the prerequisites (Common Controls Library updates) for Windows 95 (if you are installing Connectivity only).

One other option, the Browse Setup/Upgrade Help option, offers help on installation for your given operating system and the installation options available to certain platforms.

To continue with this installation, select the SQL Server 2000 Components option. You see a screen similar to the previous one, but with fewer options. This screen enables you to install the database engine and support services for SQL Server 2000.

Analysis Services is the replacement installation for the former Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) Component in SQL Server 7.0. Analysis services enables the development of OLAP Services and data-mining components.

English Query is the installation option for a further SQL Server 2000 service. English Query enables users to model English-like statements to the database— to retrieve information rather than form SQL statements.

Don’t worry too much about these services; they are a little surplus to our requirements, so we won’t need to touch on them for our application. However, you can find out more about these services by browsing through the help supplied with the Installation Wizard.

To begin the installation of SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition, select the Install Database Server option. You should see a screen.

This launches the Installation Wizard (and might take a couple moments). The steps required to perform the installation are discussed next.
