Installing the Application Following the Step-By Step Wizard
The first screen (Welcome) of the wizard appears. What you can do here is definitely limited. If you are sure you want to continue with the installation, click Next.
The second screen (Computer Name).
The third screen you see (Installation Selection).
After you have completed this installation, if you want to modify the installation or remove it, you can select the Upgrade, Remove, or Add Components to an Existing Instance of SQL Server option.
Under the Advanced Options, you can choose from the following:
- Record an Unattended .ISS file—Thisoption enables you to create a setup file for unattended installation; in other words, no user interaction.
- Registry Rebuild—This option is for fixing corrupted Registry information for your installation of SQL Server 2000.
- Maintain a Virtual Server for Fail-over Clustering (if your previous installation supports it)—This option enables you to make changes to existing cluster installations, such as changing a name or adding and removing nodes. If your previous installation does not support it, this option will be grayed out.
However, we are going to install a new instance of SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition. Select this option and click Next.
The next screen of the wizard (User Information). This screen captures the user information with which you want to register the installation. Enter your name and, if relevant, company information into the boxes provided. Click Next.
You then see the Software License Agreement and an amendment to the End User License Agreement (EULA). You must select Yes to continue with the installation.
The next screen you see (Installation Definition) in the Installation Wizard.
The following options are available:
- Client Tools Only—Use this option if you want to install only the tools necessary to connect to an existing server, and if you want to have the option of selecting individual components.
- Server and Client Tools—This is the installation option we require. It enables you to set up a server with administrative resources and gives you access to the full range of installation options.
- Connectivity Only—Use this when you want to connect to an existing server but do not want the option of selecting the components you install. The Connectivity Only option installs just the files needed for client applications to make a connection to the server. For example, the MDAC (Microsoft Data Access) drivers are updated so that you can use ODBC to connect to SQL Server 2000. Don’t worry if you do not fully understand this yet; we will take a closer look when we talk about front-end applications.
To continue with our installation, select the Server and Client Tools option and click Next.
The next screen (Instance Name) enables you to specify the instance name of the SQL Server you want to install. In the installation I perform here, I call my installation of SQL Server 2000 MYSQLSERVER. However, you do not have to use this name; you can use any name you want, as long as the name follows a few rules (discussed in the following list).
The Default check box on the screen enables the installation to proceed with the default instance name for the service under which SQL Server 2000 runs.
