Overloading the Hosting Sever System Network
Any network must be considered a limited resource. The bandwidth, or capacity to carry data, is finite. Network bandwidth can be expanded only by spending more money, which is also a limited resource. Therefore, care must be taken not to treat the network as a magic transfer mechanism and simply plan on sending however many messages of whatever size is convenient.
Organizations should be especially careful of products sold by vendors to be client/server solutions but that merely provide support for applications to run on the workstation, using the server computer only to provide data. These systems treat the network as a simple input/output (I/O) device and tend to place many messages of various sizes on the network.
Systems that use relational databases are especially vulnerable to overloading the network. Because the relational database on the server performs many processes that are part of application requirements, they certainly decrease the network load when compared with simple file servers. Many people feel that by using the relational database in the server, the system has reached the point where it can support many users. Unfortunately, unless the bandwidth of the network is very high (expensive), the network will saturate at many fewer users than advertised.
Note that the problem is that work station—based products, variously advertised as “object oriented,” 4GL, and “client/server application generator,” must perforce use generalized Structured Query Language (SQL) statements to access the relational database. As a consequence, they tend to send many requests over the network, receiving relatively raw data in return, which is then processed in the work station.
If the number of users is relatively low then these tools provide a means to create applications at relatively low cost. If the number of users is likely to grow, other approaches, such as enhanced client/server products, must be considered.
Hosting Sever System Failure to Maintain Transaction Integrity
Some of the more common complaints about client/server technology include problems with maintaining the various parts of the database in synchronization. This loss of synchronization is usually the result of not using software that guarantees transactional integrity.
Popular relational databases include transaction management in the form of the SQL COMMIT WORK statement. If the database is from a single vendor and uses the vendor’s distribution software, such as Oracle’s SQL*NET, then transaction integrity is protected (as long as the application follows the rules provided by the vendor). If, on the other hand, the application is built on some other type of distribution software, such as the popular bridges or some client/server development tools, then the enterprise must be very careful to determine if and how the software maintains transaction integrity.
Some bridges and object oriented client/server development tools support distributed databases as follows:
- A log is kept of all changes to the databases
- When the transaction is committed, the software commits each database individually
- If any commit fails, the log is used to reverse the updates
This method works fine when there is only one user making changes. When there is another user, it is possible that changes might be made to an already committed database before the reversal has started. Then, when the reversal is done, the second set of updates are lost. The probably of this loss occurring rising exponentially with the number of users on the system that will be making changes to the databases.
